Every Company Should Provide Outplacement Benefits

Goal Setting in the New Year

Despite today’s historically low unemployment rate, some industries may be going through difficult times and are making the tough decision to lay off workers. However, a recent Mercer Survey reported that only 44% of organizations provide outplacement services to individuals who transition out of their organization.

HOW OUTPLACEMENT ENHANCES AN ORGANIZATION’S CULTURE AND BRAND

The following are some reasons why companies should offer outplacement services to all employees as they transition out of their organization.

  • A Harris Poll reported that 83% of Americans said offering outplacement services to laid-off employees would improve their opinion of the organization.
  • Nearly as many stated that receiving outplacement services from their employer would make them less likely to speak negatively about them.
  • That same survey revealed that 82% felt employers who provide outplacement services care more about their employees than those who do not.

By providing outplacement services, it is our experience that large and small organizations can protect and enhance their culture and brand reputation with existing and departing employees by demonstrating that the organization cares about its people, even beyond their employment with the organization.

WHY OUTPLACEMENT IS THE BENEFIT EMPLOYEES NEED MOST WHEN THEY LOSE THEIR JOB

When an individual loses their job, it can be a stressful experience. Beyond the loss of income, it’s normal for them to feel hurt, angry, vulnerable, or even betrayed. Work is more than just making a living for most individuals. One’s job influences how one sees oneself, one’s identity, and how others view us. It gives us structure, purpose, and meaning in our lives.

By providing a quality outplacement service, the organization is providing a benefit that includes a Certified Personal Career Coach, who helps ensure the individual can deal with the stress of losing their job and helps set the job search on the right track. At The Center For Leadership Excellence, our Career Coaches work with each individual until their job search is complete, no matter how long it takes. As a result, our coaches regularly hear our clients tell us that “Having a Career Coach was one of the best benefits my former employer provided.”

In the future, make certain your organization includes outplacement with a Certified Personal Career Coach as part of the severance package for all individuals being transitioned out of the organization.
