What Really Makes a Great Leader?

By: Patty Prosser

There are many schools of thought when it comes to the makeup of a great leader. Some believe that a great leader provides clear direction and then clears the way for others to lead. Others say that great leaders see the potential in others and have the courage to develop that potential.

However you define great leadership, great leaders are distinguished by a unique blend of qualities, actions, and mindsets that enable them to not only achieve extraordinary results but also positively influence those around them.

What truly makes great leaders “great” goes beyond traditional leadership skills – it lies in how they inspire, empower, and transform people and situations. Here’s what we believe makes great leaders truly stand out:

  1. Their Ability to Inspire and Influence
  • Great leaders have the power to influence and inspire others through their passion, conviction, and energy. They create a sense of purpose that resonates deeply with people, motivating them to go above and beyond. Their presence alone can energize a team, and they often act as a catalyst for change and growth.

  1. A Profound Understanding of People
  • Great leaders possess exceptional emotional intelligence. They understand people’s motivations, fears, strengths, and weaknesses. This understanding allows them to connect with individuals on a personal level, making people feel valued, heard, and supported. This deep empathy creates trust, which is the foundation of meaningful relationships.
  • They understand their own emotions and those of others, enabling them to build strong relationships, handle conflict, and create a positive environment.
  1. A Clarity of Vision and Purpose
  • Great leaders have a clear sense of direction and purpose. They set a compelling vision that not only outlines the path forward but also answers the deeper “why.” Their vision provides a roadmap, aligning team efforts and keeping everyone focused, even when faced with adversity.

     4. A Commitment to Growth – Both Theirs and Others’

  • Great leaders are lifelong learners. They constantly seek knowledge and are willing to grow. But they don’t stop at their own development – they are equally committed to developing others.

  1. Empowering Others to Be Their Best
  • Rather than micromanaging, great leaders empower their teams. They provide autonomy, encourage ownership, and create a culture where people feel confident to take initiative. They recognize that empowering others strengthens the entire team, leading to better results and more fulfilled individuals.

  1. A Consistency in Character and Actions
  • Integrity is a cornerstone of great leadership. These leaders are consistent in their values, principles, and actions, even in challenging times. This consistency earns them respect and trust. People know where they stand with these leaders, as they lead by example and practice what they preach.

  1. Effective Communication
  • Great leaders are excellent communicators, they can convey ideas clearly and listen actively. They adapt their communication style to the audience and context, ensuring alignment and mutual understanding.
  • They possess the ability to have a voice, which stems from being an attentive listener.
  1. Decisiveness and Accountability
  • Great leaders are willing to make tough decisions and stand by them. They take responsibility for their actions and decisions and hold others accountable as well.

  1. Adaptability and Resilience
  • Great leaders are able to navigate change, setbacks, and uncertainties with resilience and flexibility. They encourage a culture of learning and innovation, viewing challenges as opportunities for growth.
  • They see challenges and setbacks not as roadblocks but as opportunities. They are resilient, embracing change and uncertainty with a positive mindset. This attitude inspires others to remain hopeful and proactive, no matter the circumstances.
  1. Focus on Team and Culture Building
  • Great leaders create a positive and inclusive culture, valuing diversity, and collaboration. They prioritize team cohesion, ensure everyone feels valued, and align the team’s efforts toward common goals.

  1. Innovation and Creativity
  • Great leaders think outside the box and encourage others to do the same. They foster an environment where creative problem-solving and innovative ideas are welcomed and pursued.
  • They possess an insatiable curiosity and a passion for continuous learning and a desire to perpetually seek ways to innovate and improve.
